'Gesture' is a proof of concept for my Master's Thesis. Two users collaborate to create a 3-D shape. Then together they then can navigate and manipulate it to create a sculptural work. Working through gestures and with a tool that provides a direct relationship to what is happening on screen means a more natural form of interaction with 3D environments than the keyboard and mouse which is also more fun.

With advances in Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, many things that seemed impossible only 5 years ago are simple today. Working in the Allosphere research group at UCSB, which is the largest collaborative corner-free virtual environment in the world, I developed a gesture recognition library on the iPhone (both touchscreen based and accelerometer based recognition) which computed the gestures on the phone allowing the user to control large 3-D visualisations.

The point of the Allosphere is to visualise data in an immersive, interactive way meaning teams of researchers can play with their data in realtime. This gives an unrivalled opportunity to question the data models and information you see in front of you. My iPhone controller allowed users to manipulate variables, navigate through 3-D space and draw new objects.

Gesture has been displayed in the Victoria & Albert Museum where it was stress tested by a group of 8-19 year olds.

Below is an early version of the prototype which was single user based. A video of the later version will be uploaded in the near future.
Born out of an attempt at the impossible, the Affinity chair explores our relationship with light and space. When alone, the chair merges into the background becoming almost invisible as it cloaks itself in its environment. However when approached, the chair wakes, becoming transparent, revealing hidden depths and creating an almost infinite space beneath. As the sitter comes closer to the chair, the chair’s heart rate increases reminding us that even though it wants to escape, it is firmly and almost painfully stuck in front of us.
"Together, we wanted to explore how tapestries, which record a moment in time, can be updated for the modern era; could we put the crowd into the tapestry in a more meaningful way. Sound has a strong connection with the history of knitting from before the industrial revolution. Groups of knitters would sit together and sing as they knitted, so sound was the perfect medium to capture visitors to the show, using something everyone has - their voice.

Your sound input is captured, converted to traditional inspired knitting patterns and hung on the walls of the V&A. Your input is is permanently in that piece and, importantly to us, presents it democratically; everyone’s voice has equal value. "

There were ‘Five Good Emperors’ of ancient Rome - Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. These five men were the most successful of their kind. ‘One Good Emperor’ asks if by mixing and blending their best attributes can we find the greatest Emperor of the Roman Empire?

Using his 3D scanning and remixing tools, Ben Alun-Jones has scanned the busts of these five emperors from the British Museum in London and the Getty Museum in California. These scans have then been blended to create different mixes of One Good Emperor. One attempt to find the perfect mix will be shown having been reproduced physically. Visitors to Works Collective in Milan will also be able to create their own version of One Good Emperor.

Many of these classical busts were actually reproductions and so the idea of the original can often be distorted. This project questions the notions of value and uniqueness in a world where any object can be scanned, sampled and reproduced, simply by recording the object on video.
